Director: Shmit Amin
Producer: Aditya Chopra
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan and Vidya Malvade.
Another flavour has launched by the Yash Raj Productions. This time no lush green fields, no running around trees, no chiffon sarees to make the ladies look their best, no melodrama and no love scenes. But this time purely the flavour of patriotism. Chak De India is directed by Shmit Amin, charters a new territory.
The Yash raj- SRK combo is back with this movie. Chak De India isn’t unconventional such, but it is definitely different inspiring at times. The execution of the subject has succeeded the purpose and meaning and also arouses patriotic sentiments. Hockey is our national sport but cricket gets more prominence in our dailies and also on news channels. The common man also has their concern with cricket and cricketers daily life. This movie is about women’s hockey to be precise, but nobody is bothered or interested in this sport. The story revolves around the Indian coach and his team. The coach Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) made his come back after 7 years from the dead past.
The ex captain has now come in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team. A team that exists on papers but not in reality. The team is a gang of girls with their own agendas.
They all have forgotten the thrill of holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth.
The coach Kabir Khan makes them learn and trained them to how to win a world tournament trophy. He evoke the desire, the devotion to fight for their country and the qualities which makes a good team. Movie start with the focus of women’s emancipation, their fight against odds and fight against the existing system. But later on the focus shifted to SRK which reveals that stardom sells the movie.
Chak De India is the story of a coach’s fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them. The film has all the right elements mixed- satire comedy, seriousness and full of emotions.
In fact, the first half is quite captivating and the expectations from the later half are equally high. The narrative gathers steam only towards the climax, which is well handled. As there is a very famous proverb that perfection is never attained in the same context the film has an erroneous element where the Australian hockey team was giggling when they were supposed to cry after loosing the match-perhaps an editing error.
Cinematography is first- rate. Music is okay. Dialogues are interesting. A few lines are indeed amazing
On the whole, this movie is a complete package for entertainment in other terms it is a paisa wasool movie. But with a slow start at places and too exciting promotion the film faced an uphill task; its fate at the ticket window is glorious in the later days.
