I think you need to lose weight, says Saif to Kareena

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

While the speculations about Kareena’s fixation with size zero are still on, it has now emerged that it is the mean pressure from her beau Saif that is keeping her uber lean. So, as some men like their women to be curvaceous, Chhote Nawab Saif prefers his lady to be dainty and trim. So much so is Saif obsessed with the lean look that a slight fluctuation in Bebo’s frame is enough to trigger his criticism.

Going back, one recalls that it was during ‘Tashan’ when Saif and Kareena started their romantic sojourn. Not to forget that at the time Kareena was at her thinnest best. And even though Saif might be fighting a mid-life crisis courtesy his bulging paunch, he doesn’t refrain from openly telling Bebo that she needs to ‘lose weight’.

It so happened that both the stars were present to perform at an award function. While the two performed together they also had separate numbers. And when Bebo came backstage after the performance, Saif openly stated that she looked overweight and needed to slim down.

Confirming the news a daily quoted a source as saying, “Saif told Kareena ‘I think you need to lose some weight, yaar’.”

Well, looks like the `size zero` mystery is finally solved.

Why men use prostitutes

Saturday, January 16, 2010

I don't get anything out of sex with prostitutes except for a bad feeling," says Ben. An apparently average, thirtysomething, middle-class man, Ben had taken an extended lunchbreak from his job in advertising to talk about his experiences of buying sex. Shy and slightly nervous, he told me, "I am hoping that talking about it might help me work out why I do it."

I, too, was hoping to understand his motives better. Ben was one of 700 men interviewed for a major international research project seeking to uncover the reality about men who buy sex. The project spanned six countries, and of the 103 customers we spoke to in London – where I was one of the researchers – most were surprisingly keen to discuss their experiences.

The men didn't fall into obvious stereotypes. They were aged between 18 and 70 years old; they were white, black, Asian, eastern European; most were employed and many were educated beyond school level. In the main they were presentable, polite, with average-to-good social skills. Many were husbands and boyfriends; just over half were either married or in a relationship with a woman.

Research published in 2005 found that the numbers of men who pay for sex had doubled in a decade. The authors attributed this rise to "a greater acceptability of commercial sexual contact", yet many of our interviewees told us that they felt intense guilt and shame about paying for sex. "I'm not satisfied in my mind" was how one described his feelings after paying for sex. Another told me that he felt "disappointed – what a waste of money", "lonely still" and "guilty about my relationship with my wife". In fact, many of the men were a mass of contradictions. Despite finding their experiences "unfulfilling, empty, terrible", they continued to visit prostitutes.

I interviewed 12 of the men, and found it a fascinating experience. One told me about his experience of childhood cruelty and neglect and linked this to his inability to form close relationships with anyone, particularly women. Alex admitted sex with prostitutes made him feel empty, but he had no idea how to get to know women "through the usual routes". When I asked him about his feelings towards the women he buys he said that on the one hand, he wants prostitutes to get to know and like him and, on the other, he is "not under delusions" that the encounters are anything like a real relationship.

"I want my ideal prostitute not to behave like one," he said, "to role-play to be a pretend girlfriend, a casual date, not business-like or mechanical. To a third person it looks like we're in love."

I felt compassion for Alex. No one had shown him how to form a bond with another human being and he was searching for something that commercial sex was never going to provide.

But another of the interviewees left me feeling concerned. Darren was young, good-looking and bright; I asked him how often he thought the women he paid enjoyed the sex. "I don't want them to get any pleasure," he told me. "I am paying for it and it is her job to give me pleasure. If she enjoys it I would feel cheated." I asked if he felt prostitutes were different to other women. "The fact that they're prepared to do that job where others won't, even when they're skint, means there's some capability inside them that permits them to do it and not be disgusted," he said. He seemed full of a festering, potentially explosive misogyny.

When asked what would end prostitution, one interviewee laughed and said, "Kill all the girls." Paul told me that it would take "all the men to be locked up". But most of them told the researchers that they would be easily deterred if the current laws were implemented. Fines, public exposure, employers being informed, being issued with an Asbo or the risk of a criminal record would stop most of the men from continuing to pay for sex. Discovering the women were trafficked, pimped or otherwise coerced would appear not to be so effective. Almost half said they believed that most women in prostitution are victims of pimps ("the pimp does the psychological raping of the woman," explained one). But they still continued to visit them.

An upcoming new law will make it illegal for men to pay for sex with a trafficked or pimped woman – and a punter's ignorance of a woman's circumstances will be no defence. Critics have suggested that this is unfair, that a man can't possibly know whether a woman is being exploited. Our interviews challenged this notion. The men knew, to some extent, about abuse and coercion in prostitution – they weren't operating under the convenient illusion that women enter the trade because they love sex. More than half admitted that they either knew or believed that a majority of women in prostitution were lured, tricked or trafficked.

More than one third said they thought the prostitutes they visited had been trafficked to London from another country, and a small number said they suspected that they had encountered a trafficking victim based on the woman's inability to speak the local language or on how young or vulnerable they appeared. "I could tell she was new to the country," said one man. "To be new in a country and be a prostitute – it can't be a choice . . . She looked troubled."

Another said that he had "seen women with bruises, cuts and eastern European accents in locations where lots of trafficked women and girls are". One man suspected that an African woman he had met was trafficked because "she was frightened and nervous. She told me she had been tricked. I had sex with her and she seemed fine with the sex. She asked me to help her, but I said there was little I could do. She might have been lying to me."

One of the most interesting findings was that many believed men would "need" to rape if they could not pay for sex on demand. One told me, "Sometimes you might rape someone: you can go to a prostitute instead." Another put it like this: "A desperate man who wants sex so bad, he needs sex to be relieved. He might rape." I concluded from this that it's not feminists such as Andrea Dworkin and myself who are responsible for the idea that all men are potential rapists – it's sometimes men themselves.

Half of the interviewees had bought sex outside of the UK, mostly in Amsterdam, and visiting an area where prostitution is legal or openly advertised had given them a renewed dedication to buying sex when they returned to the UK. Almost half said that they first paid for sex when they were below the age of 21. "Dad took me and my older brother," said David. "He paid. Maybe he wanted to make sure we weren't gay. We went to a brothel. Dad didn't do it, and I don't think he told my mum."

Another man paid for sex during a stag trip to Thailand with eight of his friends. He was disappointed. "It was a Russian girl, it wasn't the escort experience. She didn't want to talk, just lay on the bed and wanted to do the [sex] act only."

Many men seemed to want a real relationship with a woman and were disappointed when this didn't develop: "It's just a sex act, no emotion. Be prepared to accept this or don't go at all. It's not a wife or girlfriend." Others were clear that they paid for sex in order to be able to totally control the encounter, including Bob, who said, "Look, men pay for women because he can have whatever and whoever he wants. Lots of men go to prostitutes so they can do things to them that real women would not put up with."

Although some of the men said they thought the women they bought enjoyed the sex, many others admitted that they thought the women would be feeling "disgusted", "miserable", "dirty" and "scared". Ahmed said he thought the woman might feel "relief that I'm not going to kill her".

Only 6% of the men we spoke to had been arrested for soliciting prostitutes. "Deterrents would only work if enforced," said one. "Any negative would make you reconsider. The law's not enforced now, but if any negative thing happened as a consequence it would deter me." Perhaps the new law will make Albert think twice about paying for sex. He told me, "If I'd get in trouble for doing it, I wouldn't do it. In this country, the police are fine with men visiting prostitutes."

How Vidya got her groove back

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Vidya Balan, riding on the success of Paa, looks radiant. The petite actress has lost weight, gained confidence and seems very comfortable in her own skin.

For someone whose sartorial sense has come under fire several times, she decided to make things work for her with single-minded determination.

She has plunged into a diet and lifestyle overhaul. She candidly talks about the before-and-after moments.

“I went through a phase where I didn’t know whether I was coming or going. Initially.

The criticism used to hurt because I didn’t even know what I was doing wrong.

I had slipped up, become lackadaisical. It was my biggest dream to become an actress and it had come true.

I got a bit lazy and wasn’t doing my best. I finally admitted I was not being myself, superficially, you could see it in the clothes.

People were telling me that I should reinvent myself. I’m grateful that I have a strong image and I realised I was fighting that. Today, I’m no longer apologetic about who I am.” Vidya did give in to the pressure for a while, and admits that she went hopelessly wrong. That’s when she took a break and went to New York. She says, “I needed to keep away to gain a sense of perspective.”

About a year ago, she realised that a lifestyle change was in order. That’s when Atul Kasbekar recommended Vilayat Hussain, her trainer. He was shocked to hear about her dietary habits, even though she had the energy for a rigorous yoga session.

She recalls, “I’ve always exercised, but I was doing the wrong thing. I was not particular about my diet. I would not eat for 12-14 hours at a stretch, I would survive on chai. I thought it was uncool to eat between meetings and during shoots. I used to sleep for only three-four hours, which was disastrous. That slows down your metabolism.”

Her trainer sent her to a dietician, who advised her to eat every two hours. Vidya says, “I found it difficult to eat so often at first. I’d plateaued even after the diet had started. But I said I won’t give up because my energy level has shot up. For the first time in my life, I began enjoying my workouts and was able to sustain my workout for a year. I’ve even gone running at Juhu beach at 11.30-12 in the night.”

Vidya, though, was very particular that she didn’t want to lose her curves. “I don’t like the asexual look and didn’t want to look gaunt and withdrawn,” she says firmly. “We have to celebrate the Indian woman’s curves. I love the sensuousness of Indian clothes and will stick to my favourites ... cotton sarees, Kanjeevaram sarees and outfits that work for me.”

Her persistence did pay off and one day, she went for an event and everyone said she’d lost weight dramatically. She says with pride, “My skin was glowing, my hair looked better. And luckily, through the transformation, I retained my curves.”

Vidya says that previously she couldn’t work out on the days she was shooting. Now that she had started sleeping longer, even if late, she tries to get at least six-eight hours of sleep. She says, “My metabolism has revved up.

I work out about three times a week now as I’ve been busy between Paa and Ishqiya.” The change runs deeper. It has made her calmer and less snappy, she says. No more dark circles and she has the energy one needs to emote for the camera.

Vidya has the final word on the lifestyle change. She talks about the most important aspect, “If you’re not happy from within, the changes will not show. Sometimes you’re upset about a relationship, a film could be stressful, people in the industry are high strung and handling egos can be tricky.

Or you get very little time for yourself. Sometimes, you just don’t want to be around people. One has to be careful, you can’t shoot your mouth off. So I pray a lot and that keeps me rooted and grounded. I don’t follow any rituals but I am a spiritual person.”

TIPS I've started eating egg whites. I'm a pure vegetarian, and on a good day it's okay, on a bad day I can't stand it. Eating eggs is an effort for me. I have roti-subzi-daal, even rice, but I don't mix roti and rice. I don't mix fruits either. I will only have an apple, but not have an orange with it. I even eat some chocolate once in a while, as I have a sweet tooth.

I have lots of water. No fruit juices, I'd rather have the fruit. Vegetable juices I drink once in a while, though I'm supposed to have it everyday. I can't give up my masala chai. I used to have acidity when I didn't eat for hours I avoid maida as much as possible. I have multigrain bread instead. I try and stick to natural food.

Dabboo Ratnani on Vidya balan I didn't have to push Vidya hard to bring out her sensual side. She loved the idea and it has changed the way people look at her. She's very pretty, she photographs really well, all she needs is the right make-up, hair and lighting. She has very expressive eyes. She has lost weight, but her face always looked pretty.

Now she fills in her clothes better, she is more comfortable with any angle and is more confident. She's experimenting and is open to suggestions. Vidya is comfortable with sensuality, but is clear about the way it will be shot. She understands the aesthetics.

Wanna buy Kareena?

Friday, January 8, 2010

Kareena Kapoor has finally firmed up plans for launching her signature global clothing line later this year. DNA had earlier broken the news that she was in talks with top international design houses for the same. It is now learned that her label will travel to Europe and the US; India will mostly have her pret line up for grabs in select outlets.

Brand equity analysts say this would only bolster her position as a global brand. Kareena says, “I have the plans in place. I just have to execute them. The line will be high-end, very rich and something that suits the taste of global buyers since I will look at having great business in US and Europe. I like to experiment with my looks. I like to wear new things and I have kept myself updated. My line will be fresh but will reflect my style.”

Kareena has shown she can effortlessly pull off traditional Indian ethnic wear as well as look drop-dead -gorgeous in Western chic. A style icon in her own right, Kareena says she doesn’t like being called a diva.

“I think everyone can relate to me. If I can look sexy, I can also look like a girl-next-door. I think because of this I have got films that have explored both these sides of my personality. I don’t like being called a diva. That’s not me. I think because of this image I have also got the brands that I have. I have a great mix of mass-based as well as high-end luxury products that I endorse. My style has always been relaxed and confident. Every girl should wear what she feels she looks best in. That actually set trends,” she says.
Ask her with a global brand positioning will she sign on some Hollywood movies and she shoots off, “If an interesting movie comes my way, I will always take it up no matter what the language is.”

And what is Kareena’s take on male actors in Bollywood being paid much more than female actors?

“It is a harsh truth but cinema across the world is a male-dominated industry. Even today, Bollywood films are made keeping the hero in mind. Very few films like Jab We Met are attempted because the prejudice is that women-centric movies don’t work. People like to go and see the heroes saving the situation rather than heroines and so they naturally become bigger brands,” she ends.

Struggling days difficult yet memorable, Shahid Kapoor

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Shahid Kapur feels his struggling days were difficult -- from renting a number of houses to spending a night in a second hand Maruti 800 to giving 100s of auditions and getting rejected -- yet memorable.
"All these things are a memory. I am very happy and proud of the fact that God has been so kind to me and given me so much. I am glad that I was able to get through all those difficulties in my life," said Shahid, who spent a whole night sitting on the roof and bonnet of a car along with his ‘Chance Pe Dance’ co-star Genelia D`Souza at the Kamalistan Studios here, promoting their movie that releases Jan 15.

At around midnight Wednesday, the duo arrived near the car in T-shirts and track pants.

Vada pao (bun) and tea vendors were present along with `khatiyas` (string cot) nearby for the audience.

In the film, Shahid plays a struggler who comes to Mumbai to make it big in the movies.

Sources said the activity, which continued till 7 am Thursday, was planned as it resembles the lives of those who come to Mumbai to try their luck and also because a scene in the movie depicts it.

Citing a real-life incident when he spent a night in a car during his struggling days, though he had his house and well-settled family in Mumbai, the actor told reporters, "We always lived in a rented flat and we had to shift from one flat to the other and my family was not in town. Due to some reason we had to leave the flat a day before and I had to spent the night in the car."

Sexy Katrina Kaif with two 'gays'

Two straight guys pretending as gays will now have a crush on Bollywood’s most desirable woman - Katrina Kaif. The cute gal has been finalized for the sequel to Dostana which had Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham as two heterosexual men playing homos due to unavoidable circumstances.

Since Priyanka Chopra walked out hand in hand with Bobby Deol at the end of the first movie, she obviously can’t play a central role in the sequel. However, director Tarun Mansukhani, who’s very fond of the actress, has decided to include a cameo for PC in the sequel’s script.

Though the buzz is that Priyanka will make an appearance in a face-off scene with Katrina, Mansukhani denies it even as he confirms PC’s presence in the sequel.

However, the most exciting would be to see what kind of chemistry Abhishek cracks up with Katrina. The lady grooved in well with John in New York. But this is the first time she’ll be rubbing her shoulders with Abhi.

Katrina to get The Italian Job with Priyanka

Sometime ago the news had been out that Abbas-Mustan will bring an Indian version of a popular Hollywood flick ‘The Italian Job’. Grapevines then had it that the film will bring in Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor together, along with Neil Mukesh and Katrina Kaif.

The current buzz about this Hindi remake is that it will also have Priyanka Chopra, Akshay Khanna and Kunal Kapoor; dismissing Bebo rumours.

According to the film’s screenplay writer Rohit Jugraj, the Hindi version of ‘The Italian Job’ has been considerably changed, in spite the fact that the producers and Abbas-Mustan have bought the remake rights. “For one, the stakes for the heist are much higher. The situations, fights and adventures are all different - and so are the characters,” added Jugraj.

On the other hand Abbas-Mustan too confirmed that the script has undergone a lot of changes, though in spirit their ‘The Italian Job’ will remain the same. Revealing about the casting, the duo stated that they have not yet locked in the entire cast, but are indeed in talks to rope in the above mentioned stars. “It’s a very big project and we need to get the biggest names in place before we start,” said the filmmakers.

when Shakti Kapoor accosted by security guards

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

While some actors prefer to go unrecognised and often even resort to disguises to escape public attention, there are others

Bollywood villain Shakti Kapoor was in for a bit of a rude shock on Tuesday morning while shooting for Anees Bazmee’s No Problem at Film City.

Shakti, who plays a Sikh in the climax of the film, was headed for the sets in character when he was suddenly accosted by security guards. “I have grown a beard for this role. At around 11am, I was adjusting my turban and walking from my vanity van towards the sets when two guards ran up to me and asked me who I was. Obviously, they hadn’t recognised me.”

Surprise turned to dismay and then anger, as Shakti realised that neither of them recognised him despite him having done so many films in his long career.

In what appears to be retaliation, Shakti decided to provoke the guards. He told them that he was a visiting sardar and wanted to meet the film’s lead actors, Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor. He even threw in some choice Punjabi abuses to really look the part. Not that the guards were in any doubt.

“At this point, they asked me to leave the sets. I had a big verbal showdown with them and they became very aggressive with me,” Shakti adds. He’d done what he had set out to, but now the situation was threatening to get out of hand.

“By then, bahut hungama ho chuka tha. I thought that enough is enough,” he says. But before he could call the crew members of No Problem to enlighten the guards, a few bystanders came to Shakti’s rescue. “They told the guards that I was Shakti Kapoor, the actor, and asked them how they could possibly commit such a faux pas. There were around 40 junior artistes dressed as sardars on the sets that day - all unknown faces - but the guards didn’t seem to have a problem with any of them. Why me? I still haven’t figured that out,” says the actor.

Abhishek calls me 'jiggly poo': John Abraham

Bollywood hunk John Abraham, who is back to playing his gay self in the sequel to Dostana with Abhishek Bachchan, says that the junior B has named him "jiggly poo".

The actors became friends while working together in the gay comedy and continue to share the same equation.

"After we starred together in Dostana, Abhishek has nicknamed me as his 'jiggly poo'. He sends me messages on my birthday saying 'Happy Birthday Jiggly Poo'!," said John.

John and Abhishek called each other the same even in the film, and the name seems to have stuck on since then.

The 2008 film, which had John playing a lothario pretending to be in a homosexual relation with Abhishek, was directed by Tarun Mansukhani and also starred Priyanka Chopra.

The 37-year-old actor will be reprising the same role in the sequel too, which will be filmed from June this year.

"The sequel will pick up from where Dostana left off. So there is me and Abhishek playing the same characters again," he said.

Promising that the sequel will be even more fun-filled, the actor said, "It is hilarious! I almost fell off the chair while reading the script, it is so funny!," said John, on the sidelines of an event where he launched new bike models from Yamaha at the ongoing Auto Expo in the capital.

John, who made his Bollywood debut with Jism in 2003, has proved himself as an actor with films like 'Water' and New York. But he has cut down on the number of releases to one or two per year.

"This is how it has been. In 2008 there was Dostana,
New York in 2009. I would rather do sensible stuff and be remembered for them rather than merely increase the number of films in my kitty," said John.

He has recently finished shooting Abbas Tyrewala's unnamed project and will start with an action film next.

Although John made his entry into showbiz as a model, he says that he had to struggle a lot to find his footing in the film industry, without a film lineage to back him.

"I hail from the middle class and my values come from there. People identify with me because of that and look upon me for having acquired a position through sheer struggle without any backing in the industry," said John.

He made heads turn in his modelling days and went on to win hearts as the metrosexual man in Bollywood. John is now looked upon as a youth icon, an image he is totally comfortable with.

"Once you are named a role model, it is up to you how you use it. I am happy with the position and am also aware of the responsibilities that come with it," he said.

His love for bikes is also something that connects him with today's youth, but John is against any kind of show-off and propagates safe biking.

"I don't do any more stupid stunts, as I have realized that youngsters do follow me and try to ape whatever I do. I never go in for rash biking and ride really slow so that people do it too," said John.

The actor also a unique collection of helmets alongwith the number of bikes he owns.

"I mix and match helmets with bikes the way you mix and match clothes everyday,"

Shah Rukh Khan's green move

This year the big buzz at the Delhi Auto Expo has been about small and green cars given the concerns over climate change and gas guzzling cars.

Shah Rukh Khan launched a green version of Hyundai's i10 car in New Delhi at the ongoing Auto Expo. Hyundai Motors India Ltd, which is India's second largest car manufacturer, unveiled their electric car during the 2010 Auto Expo.

Hours before the launch the star, who has just joined the Twitter, posted an 'ironic' tweet: "Got to go have a flight to catch. Taking a jet plane.. travel in a motorcade and launch an environmentally friendly I 20 Hyundai car. Ironic."

The i10 Electric which made its debut to the Indian audience in October 2007, was also showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid September this year.

In place of the 1.1 or 1.2 litre petrol engines which power the Hyundai i10, in India and overseas, the i10 Electric will be powered by a 49kW (66.6 PS) electric motor under the hood and driving its front wheels.

Hyundai Motor India already has a strong line-up of alternate fuel technology like: Santro CNG & LPG, Accent CNG & LPG and i10 CNG in India. The unveiling of the i10 Electric further reconfirms Hyundai's commitment to develop environmentally friendly cars for the global automobile market.

WHAT?!! Savita Bhabhi is back

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

India inspite of its booming population has always been coy (hypocritically so) about sex. Half-clad, rain-drenched heroines prancing about on celluloid are absolute hits but talking about sex, or even sex education is an absolute no-no.

Defying all this Savita Bhabhi, a voluptuous, sari-clad, 29-year old character and India's first only toon porn site surfaced, in March 2008, obviously becoming a huge hit with almost 2,00,000 hits a day.

In June 2009, the Indian government ordered all ISPs to block SavitaBhabhi.com.

But it seems Savita Bhabhi is back under kirtu.com in all her uninhibited sexuality.

The site is a melange of Savita Bhabhi's sexual exploits along with two more series Saath Kahaniyan and Kinara Lane, which will be launched soon.

Now it’s for us to see, how much of Savita Bhabhi we are capable of saving this time. Will her fate face a similar end, or will it mark a new beginning? Let's wait and watch.

Ram Gopal against wishing Happy New Year

Monday, January 4, 2010

Ram Gopal Varma thinks out of the box. When it comes to movies or story concepts or even casting actors, RGV has never followed rules. Now here's more on this maverick film-maker. While everyone may've received the standard new year messages from family and friends, the one sent by RGV catches you by complete surprise.
Let me quote the message verbatim: "Since we never ever really learn anything from the old years that have gone by and yet we stupidly keep on wishing each other a happy new year and this we keep on doing year after year, inspite of knowing that last year's new year wishes didn't give us even an iota of extra happiness ever and also none of us ever believe even for one second that neither our wishes nor anybody's wishes will never ever amount to our's or anybody's happiness ever, I hereby declare that I am not going to wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

RGV's new year greetings are a shocker as well, right?

British PM Brown named worst-dressed man

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has received a pre-election kick in the pants, being named the worst-dressed man of the year by the British edition of GQ magazine.

Brown, who faces a gruelling battle at this year's general election, beat off competition from French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British comedian Russell Brand and reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il for the title.

Brown moves from three in last year's rankings to top the 2010 list for being "anything but a prime example of British style," the men's magazine said.

"Perhaps the French president should spend less time worrying about his stature and more time worrying about his style," it added of Sarkozy, who reportedly at five-foot five-inches (1.65 metres), often wears stacked heels.

London mayor Boris Johnson also made the top 10.

British actor Robert Pattinson, 23, star of the Twilight vampire romance franchise, meanwhile, topped the best dressed list, which comes out Thursday.

The members of pop band Take That came in second, followed by Arctic Monkeys' singer Alex Turner, with US style guru Tom Ford, Bond star Daniel Craig and Elton John's partner David Furnish also winning top 10 spots.

David Cameron, leader of Britain's main opposition Conservatives party and widely tipped to win this year's election, was named at number eight.

Footballer David Beckham and rapper Dizzee Rascal rounded out the top 10.
